The ancient Indian Tribes called La Quinta home and named it 'The Garden of Eden' for its astounding surroundings of mountains, hills & coves. In the early 1920s Walter H. Morgan of San Francisco came to the Desert due to his poor health and bought 1,400 acres from the Cahuilla Indian Tribe, and built the exclusive La Quinta Hotel in the Cove of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The hotel still stands and is known today as the infamous La Quinta Resort.
Some stories attribute the name "La Quinta" to the Spanish explorers who in their quest to expand their territory, would ride for four full days and rest on the fifth day 'La Quinta'(the fifth in Spanish).
