The Cahuilla Native Indians' name for "Palm Springs" was Agua Caliente which means hot water, after the historical hot mineral springs that still are part of the Spa Resort and Hotel in Palm Springs.
For centuries, Palm Springs Area and its Canyons, the Taquitz Canyon, the Chino Canyon and the Indian Canyon were home to The Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians.
In 1876 the Federal Government gave the southern Pacific Railroad 10 miles of the odd sections of the desert , and deeded 32,000 acres to the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians in the even sections , scattering their land across the desert and the mountains in a chessboard pattern. Now only 6,700 acres of Palm Springs city is owned by the Indian Tribe.
In 1873 the first Los Angeles to the Desert train arrived in Indio ,and that brought the people in droves. In the 1920s it became a famous hangout of the Hollywood Celebrities who bought land, homes and golf courses. Palm Springs reflected Hollywood's Golden Era.
By the early 1930s an area close to downtown Palm Springs became known as The Movie Colony. Some of the famous stars who owned homes in Palm Springs, were Cary Grant, Dinah shore, Jack Benny, Bob Hope and many other Hollywood Stars and Moguls.
